Though Boyden, who is a member of the Woodlands Métis, was raised in Willowdale, Toronto, his novels have chronicled the lives of Northern Ontario Crees from the Moosonee area. His first novel, Three Day Road, is the story of two Cree soldiers serving in the Canadian military during World War I. The follow-up, Through Black Spruce, is the story of Will, a son of one of the characters in Three Day Road. A third novel is on the way in this exciting new Canadian series.
Upon receiving his award, Boyden said, “I’m worried that my friends up in Moosonee and Moose Factory aren’t watching, but I hope they are because I want to tell them, this is for you guys, too!”
Both Through Black Spruce and Three Day Road are available in bookstores.
