Quebec smokers launch $27-billion lawsuit
The landmark class-action suit representing over 1.8 million smokers against Imperial Tobacco Canada, JTI-Macdonald Corp. and Rothmans Benson & Hedges is currently being held in Montreal.
The case represents two classes of plaintiffs, those who have contracted smoking-related illnesses and those who are unable to quit.
Approximately 90,000 members who smoked at least 15 cigarettes a day for five years and have contracted emphysema or cancer of the throat, larynx or lungs after 1998 are seeking $105,000 each.
While 1.8 million smokers who claim they have an addiction and are unable to quit are demanding $10,000 each.
