Highway of Tears

The Highway of Tears in British Columbia between the northern cities of Prince George and Prince Rupert is so named because 18 women have gone missing along the route over the last several years.

The Walk 4 Justice group and friends and family of the missing women traveled from Prince Rupert to Parliament Hill in September to raise awareness saying there was inaction on the part of the police and the government.

Despite having three months notice, Prime Minister Harper wouldn’t come and accept a petition from the group. This angered Nathan Cullen, NDP MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley

“I was really impressed with the Prime Ministers’ apology to First Nations residential school survivors,” Cullen said. “But his actions when these people walked all the way to Ottawa it makes me doubt the sincerity of that apology.”

RCMP have called a meeting for families of murdered and missing women in the Highway of Tears cases in Vancouver to take place this week.

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) said Canada should set up an inquiry that will look into reasons for the failure of law enforcement to investigate the cases of missing and murdered aboriginal women over the past two decades.
