Sacred Moose
Ontario Provincial Police officers in Timmins were a little surprised to come across a white moose recently. Fortunately, one officer had a camera and snapped a few shots of this rare animal.
White animals have always had significance for First Nations peoples who practice traditional beliefs. Traditionalist Star of the Nipmuc tribe of Massachusetts told the Nation one has to be careful when reporting and giving significance to the animal.
“An albino animal is a genetic thing and easily recognizable by the pink eyes and such. A white animal is different,” said Star, “When the animal is white it is an incarnation of that particular animal spirit. The white colour is a result of the physical manifestation of the spirit world. This is why we consider it sacred.”
Star went on to say such animals can be linked to prophecy and are usually considered to be a sign of change.
