Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Chief Ghislain Picard expressed shock and disapproval recently over Quebec Aboriginal Affairs Minister Pierre Corbeil’s signing of an agreement for sustainable development of groundwater resources in Abitibi-Témiscaminque. The agreement was made without any consultation of the Algonquin groups within the area. In doing so Picard has said that Corbeil is not honouring his commitments as Indian Affairs Minister but rather those of his electoral region.

It is the position of the AFNQL that the premier and not an appointed minister should be responsible for Indian Affairs within the province.

“This type of situation has lasted long enough, and time has come for the provincial government to take a good look at itself and act in a respectful manner in its relations with First Nations. I can tell you that time has come where we can no longer let this matter pass without a protest. We have recently adopted a declaration on a process of affirmation of sovereignty, which will be instrumental in changing the relation that we will entertain with governments,” stated Picard in a press release.
