New Task Force Formed to Investigate Missing Women Cases in Manitoba
In that there are over 520 documented cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women in Canada, the province of Manitoba has developed its own special task force to probe these cases within the province.
The Manitoba government, RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service have come together jointly on the matter and launched the special task force on August 26.
The newly formed Manitoba Integrated Task Force for Missing and Murdered Women will consist of three RCMP officers, two RCMP analysts and four officers from the Winnipeg Police Service, all of whom are experienced in the field.
The formation of the task force is being heralded by Aboriginal and women’s rights groups across the country as this is the first attempt being made to investigate the issue on a large scale.
Canada has been sanctioned both by the United Nations and by Amnesty International for the alarming number of unsolved cases involving missing or murdered Aboriginal women in recent years.
