Philip Awashish is now a Doctor
On June 11, McMaster University awarded Philip Awashish a degree as a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
McMaster President Peter George said the degree was given because of Awashish’s contributions to Aboriginal rights, culture, governance and laws. George commented on Awashish’s role in James Bay Phase I, the La Grande Project and his role as chief negotiator of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement.
Awashish was also chief of Mistissini and Deputy Grand Chief of the Grand Council. Currently Awashish is a commissioner on the Cree Naskapi Commission. This organization was a result of the Cree Naskapi Act, Canada’s first foray into Aboriginal self-governance.
