The Wreath of Hope and Angel Tree
The folks at Meechum in Mistissini are gearing up for their Christmas charity campaign which includes the Wreath of Hope campaign to feed needy families and the Angel Tree to collect gifts for children whose families can not afford them. Every year Meechum creates an Angel Tree in cooperation with social services whereby paper angels are created to represent a child in need and hung on the tree. Those looking to help can select an angel for a boy or girl of the indicated age group and purchase a gift for that child. Between 200-250 gifts are generated from this drive annually. Meechum also raises funds within its store for food baskets for needy families. Both the baskets and the gifts are delivered simultaneously. According to Meechum’s Beverly Quin, those looking to lend a helping hand with cash contributions or through the Angel Tree drive have until December 18 to do so. The money raised by Meechum at this time is not just about spreading holiday joy. “The remainder of the money is used for families throughout the year if they need a food voucher. It could be a young mother or a family in need. We usually help out about two to three families a month,” said Quin. For more information, call Meechum at 418-923-3217.
