Abraham Rupert announced January 13 he will soon step down as Chisasibi Chief, citing health reasons.

Rupert suffered a heart attack soon after his election in 2010, but returned to his post after a short time. He will remain chief through to March, then will officially vacate his position.

“We are sad to see him go,” said Deputy Chief Daisy House-Lameboy. “But we respect his decision to put his health first and we wish him well.”

Rupert was the first Chisasibi chief elected to a five-year term. Previous terms lasted just three years, but the community voted to extend this in 2010.

An election will be held after Rupert steps down to decide who will carry out the final three and a half years of his term.
