Niko Trapper, a 14-year-old former Mistissini resident, was recently selected as Rookie of the Year in the Bantam CC division in Saguenay. Nominated by coaches of the Ambassadeurs de Chibougamau, a league committee voted Trapper as the number one rookie in his league.

Trapper accepted the honour at an awards gala in early March. Trapper mentioned that he is very grateful for the support of his mother, brothers and cousins and appreciates the fact that he is able to live with his family while playing hockey in Chibougamau.

After losing his father at a young age and moving from Mistissini to Chibougamau, Trapper underwent a transition period that forced him to leave Quebec’s child hockey development program. He didn’t get back on the ice until he was nine, when he joined a Novice single A team.

Since then, Trapper has quickly progressed on the ice. Earning rookie of the year in a competitive division shows that his hard work and dedication is starting to pay off.
